AERIS GLOBAL JETS

Buyer's guide

How to buy a private jet

Eight clear steps, from defining your mission to taking delivery — so you buy right, with no surprises.

The steps

1. Define your mission

How many passengers, your typical longest leg, which airports you use and how many hours a year you fly. These answers decide whether you need a light, midsize or large-cabin jet.

2. Set a full budget

The purchase price is only the start. Budget for crew, hangar, insurance, maintenance and fuel — usually a significant annual amount.

3. New or pre-owned

A new jet comes with warranty and your chosen spec, but with a wait and faster depreciation. A pre-owned jet is quicker and cheaper, and needs a thorough inspection.

4. Arrange financing

Cash, a dedicated aircraft loan or a lease. Getting pre-approval before a serious search makes you a stronger buyer.

5. Search and compare

Compare flight hours, engine maintenance programs, damage history and complete records. Some aircraft sell without public listings.

6. Offer and deposit

A letter of intent with price and terms, and a refundable deposit held in escrow until inspections are complete.

7. Pre-purchase inspection

An inspection at an independent, approved facility you choose — not the seller. Any findings become the basis for negotiation.

8. Closing and delivery

Final purchase agreement, funds through escrow, aircraft registration and title transfer, then delivery.

Common mistakes

  • Buying more aircraft than your real mission needs
  • Skipping an independent inspection to save time
  • Forgetting the annual operating costs
  • Ignoring missing maintenance records
