AERIS GLOBAL JETS

Cost guide

What does it cost to own a private jet?

Beyond the purchase price there are fixed costs and costs that depend on flight hours. Here is what to know.

Fixed costs (even when not flying)

Flight crew

Pilots and sometimes a flight attendant: salaries, training and yearly checks.

Hangar

Protected parking at an airport. Prices vary a lot between airports.

Insurance

Depends on the aircraft value, pilot experience and the regions flown.

Management and records

Registration, airworthiness, maintenance programme and records, usually through a management company.

Variable costs (per flight hour)

Fuel

Often the biggest cost, and it grows with every flight hour.

Maintenance and engines

Routine maintenance, major inspections every few years, and a reserve for engine overhauls.

Landing and ground fees

Landing fees, handling, ground services and crew accommodation.

Roughly how much

As a general estimate only: about $1M a year for a light jet and $3M–$5M a year for a heavy jet, depending on how much you fly. The real figure depends on each case.

When to buy and when to charter

Flying more than roughly 200 hours a year usually favours ownership. Below that, leasing or charter can make more financial sense.

How to reduce the cost

A well-kept pre-owned aircraft, a management company that shares costs, and chartering the aircraft out when you are not using it, subject to licensing rules.

All figures are general estimates only, not a quote.
